Recyling Fashion

When I was a tween in the 90s obssessed with late 70s attire, particularly bell bottoms, my mum (no, not British, but I love referring to her like that in type) would sigh how “she lived through this look already” and seem utterly bored at the revival of a trend she felt she owned. And now, with Gen Z and the twenty somethings below me all hyped out on 90s and 2000s style, I finally get it. In my mind, style icons like Katherine Heigl in Wish Upon a Star and Britney Spears in anything from that time inspired me and my fashionable peers to mold a unique new look of our own, something fresh our parents hadn’t done. Seeing it return, even though I’m still a MAJOR fan of this aesthetic, does feel a tad bit less stimulating than round 1, when I was seeing something I felt I’d never seen before.

However, we all know this resurgence and “style recyling” isn’t new at all and literally happens every 8-10 years. We get bored, we move away from a look, we get bored again, and we go back. I, myself, engage in this backpedaling often, and even recently, when I pulled out an old pair of floral velvet shorts from my A/W 2013 DEIVIE collection. The grunge-era material, sheer with burnout warm-hued flowers, paired so well with my new Saint Laurent platforms, Anthropologie silk florette blouse, and sheer tights that suddenly this collection was alive and well again! Not that I’m mad about it. The only thing I’m mad about is that I sold some of these original samples and now I miss them. Le sigh.
