Is chatGPT my new Google?

In the past couple of years many of us have moved from Google and Yelp to Tiktok as our resource for information gathering - from the hottest new restaurants to product reviews, but, as generative AI evolves, is chatGPT the “next gen” of online search? I decided to test out this theory with what I know best, fashion, and honestly, I’m kind of impressed!

Prompting the chatGPT systems to give me a list and brief descriptions about the top fashion trends of the Spring/Summer 2023 runways, I was delivered really accurate runway synopses that I was able to back up with photographic *runway receipts* (all property of VogueRunway). There were a few callouts, which I’ll notate below with a squiggle, but overall the information was succint, informative, and not too off-base from what I would find on any style news website.

Neon Brights

  1. Neon Brights This season, neon colors were everywhere, from bold green to electric pink. Designers such as Jeremy Scott, Versace, and Christopher John Rogers all showcased this trend on their runways.

**Note: per VogueRunway’s collections archive, CJR did not have a SS23 collection. However, his Resort 2023 collection did in fact include some neon. Close enough if you ask me!

Relaxed Tailoring

2. While tailored pieces have been popular for some time, Spring/Summer 2023 saw a shift towards more relaxed, oversized fits. Brands such as Loewe, Chloé, and Acne Studios all showed this trend on their runways.

Exaggerated Sleeves

3. Dramatic, oversized sleeves were a standout trend this season. From puff sleeves to billowing shapes, designers such as Marc Jacobs, Gucci, and Dior all incorporated this trend into their collections.

High-Shine Fabrics

4. Shimmering, high-shine fabrics were a key trend on the runways this season. Metallic finishes and glossy surfaces were seen in collections from designers such as Saint Laurent, Givenchy, and Balmain.

**Note: This is the first “trend” I encountered in which the designer references are a little off; I had to really dig in each of these collections to find a piece that had any shine or metallics, but I do know metals and SHINE are trending.

Crochet

5. Crochet made a comeback this season, with designers such as Alberta Ferretti, Miu Miu, and Oscar de la Renta incorporating the technique into their collections. From dresses to tops, this trend adds a touch of texture and bohemian flair to any outfit.

**Note: Miu Miu did not actually have any crochet pieces in their S/S 2023 runway show. However, a quick google search for “miu miu crochet” did in fact produce quite a few Spring pieces now live on retailers sites! Including this $420 crochet scrunchie selling on Farfetch (want it? click here). I find it super interesting that it was able to locate and identify that Miu Miu hopped on the crochet bandwagon, though!

Bra Tops

6. Bra tops have been a popular trend for a few seasons now, but they were particularly prevalent on the Spring/Summer 2023 runways. Designers such as Chanel, Prada, and Michael Kors all showcased variations of the trend, from delicate lace to sporty iterations.

**Note: I wasn’t able to locate any S/S 2023 Chanel bra tops, so this seems to be the AI’s first real miss. That said, bra tops were pretty present on the runways, so I subbed in a Miu Miu version to fit the narrative. Even Prada didn’t have many bra tops in their Spring show, though they do have a broad assortment available for purchase online right now though of super cute options. I particularly adore this sparkly boxer set.

Cut Outs

7. Cut-out detailing was seen on a number of runway shows this season, adding a playful and sexy edge to garments. Brands such as Versace, Fendi, and Balenciaga all featured the trend in their collections.

Utility

8. Utility-inspired pieces were a recurring trend on the Spring/Summer 2023 runways. From cargo pants to utilitarian jackets, designers such as Balenciaga, Off-White, and Alexander McQueen showcased the practical and functional trend.

**Note: I don’t know if I agree that Balenciaga belongs in this category. I found their Spring show a little more “grunge dystopia” than utilitarian, but overall the trend was alive for S/S 2023 so I’ll let it slide.

Oversized Accessories

9. Accessories were bigger than ever this season, with oversized bags, hats, and jewelry all making a statement on the runways. Brands such as Valentino, Loewe, and Chanel all showcased this trend.

**Note: Chanel didn’t have too many oversized accessories on the runway, outside of a few large-ish pairs of earrings, but I suppose these count!

Pastels

10. While bold, bright colors dominated this season's runways, pastels also made an appearance. From baby blue to pale pink, designers such as Erdem, Dior, and Miu Miu all showcased the soft and feminine trend.

**Note: Pastels were major on the S/S 2023 runways, however, Dior and Miu Miu were not two collections where I would note them highly prevalent (or even existent). I added in some support examples from Brandon Maxwell & Zimmermann where the delicate palette was more of a presence!
